Our Grass Our Roots Memphis
We are everywhere!
  • Under Construction
WHAT?
Our Grass Our Roots is a grassroots, non-profit movement to assist in transforming the North Memphis neighborhood into an economically sustainable, community focused, cultural capital that will be the grounds for fighting gentrification and citizen displacement, involving the community, structures and businesses already present, and nurturing the individuals within the community to help make Memphis a better place.
WHO?
Our Grass Our Roots was raised out of the unrest of North Memphis citizens that want to fight against the proposed city "vision" of an urban farm that would demolish the homes, schools, daycares, churches, and businesses in the 38107 area.  It is inspired by members of the community; however, Our Grass Our Roots is open and accepting of all people, regardless of race, gender, religion, sexuality, creed, age, and location.

WHERE?
The initial focus is the heart of North Memphis, which is along Jackson Avenue, Firestone Avenue and Chelsea Avenue starting from N. Manassas Street and stretching all the way to North Watkins Street.  Our Grass Our Roots intends to eventually assist with plans of progress in all Memphis neighborhoods that have been neglected.
WHEN?
There is no time like the present!

WHY?
Memphis is a wonderful city, but for whom?  Many citizens do not have adequate housing, properly funded schools, economic equity and independence, sufficient food access, college-prep programs, career training programs, job possibilities, access to public transportation, satisfactory police involvement, and many do not own their own homes.  We realize that it is time to step up, stand up, and speak up.  Stake Your Claim! This is Our Grass. These are Our Roots.
HOW?
Our Grass Our Roots seeks to unite all citizens and current organizations of North Memphis and beyond who support this cause to transform our own communities bit by bit.  By informing citizens of their rights, their resources, and their options, we can promote land ownership, advocate for our schools, and create our own businesses in order to build economic independence in the community.  By resisting gentrification and community plans that have not consulted the community of their wants and needs, we can become a powerful voice of change.  By assisting one another, we can build a stronger community based on the needs and wants of the people.  By advancing the community, we can invest in a neighborhood of promising individuals that will lead and maintain Memphis, TN as a city of growth and love.
